Vishnu is the preserver of life. His origins go back to the Vedic gods where he is identified with Narayan, the original egg-foetus in the waters of Nara, thus the life-urge and preserver of life. His wife is Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity whose worship is widespread in her own temples.
Vishnu’s chief job is to intervene to save the world from destruction. To do this he assumes corporeal form from time to time and becomes an incarnation or avatar.
